WP Ad Manager

An Ad Spot and Ad Group Plugin for WordPress

Create Ad Spots for your WordPress Site and place them where you want them!

The WP Ad Manager plugin can be used to place ads and random content of whatever kind you want on your WordPress web site.

Place text above and/or below each ad block

With the WP Ad Manager plugin, you can choose to place text above and/or below each block of content if you want. And no, the WP Ad Manager plugin does not automatically display any kind of “Powered by…” message…though you can certainly do so if you would like.

Text above and below content blocks

Text can be placed above and below content blocks.

The "text" above and below ad blocks can actually be plain text, html, or even javascript.

Place text above and/or below individual ads and content

Each ad spot or content area can have text placed above and/or below it.

This can be useful when using the PWS WP Ad Manager plugin to display ads for different pages or categories on your site.

Text above and below content spots

Text can be placed above and below individual content items.

Place the type of content you want

With the PWS Ad Manager plugin, you choose the type of content that you want to display.

Currently supported content types include text, html, and client side scripting languages such as javascript.

Note: If you refresh this page, you will see different items shown in the below fields as they are being shown by the plugin.

Text Ad Spots

You can place text content, whether ads, quotes, or something else. Just below I’ve placed a couple of quotes. Notice that neither of the displayed quotes are the same as the one shown in the site header.

A man is none the less a slave because he is allowed to choose a new master once in a term of years.
~ Lysander Spooner
When men yield up the privilege of thinking, the last shadow of liberty quits the horizon.
~ Thomas Paine
Image Ad Spots

You can place images as well as text, and even mix the two together if you want. In fact, you can place just about any kind of html in an ad group if you are so inclined. Notice that the group below _does_ repeat items in the custom header above as I have set it to ignore anything already drawn.

Amazon Widget Ad Spots

And, of course, you can display widgets and other javascript snippets if you want. Just below I have it set to display one of three different amazon widgets each time the page loads.

Google AdSense Ad Spots

You can use Google AdSense ad spots with this plugin and have them rotated either with different looking AdSense spots or even completely different types of content.

As long as you choose to use one of your types to display things that take up about the same amount of space you can show all kinds of different things randomly in an area while keeping a clean look.

And a lot more…

How you choose to use the WP Ad Manager is completely up to you. Whether you use it to place advertisements, show videos, serve up random quotes, display image galleries, or something else entirely is for you to decide.

Place individually, as a row, as a column, or as a block

When showing content, you can choose to show a single item, a row of items, a column of items, or a block of items with an arbitrary number of rows and columns. In fact, you don’t need to set the number of rows or columns, only whether you want to use rows and columns and how many items to allow for a row or column before starting another one. The system will automatically start new rows and columns as needed if enough items are chosen.

Normally, no item is shown on the same page twice. However, you can add a flag to displayed blocks of content to tell them to ignore what has already been drawn and display results without considering such.

It is also worth knowing that you can pass in option parameters in the tags to override the default settings for any coin type. Above, the 2 x 2 block would look a lot nicer if I passed in bstyle=width:275px;. See:

Have content displayed with the criteria you want

Instead of having to set up each ad spot with the items you want in it, you can choose to have each of the four types of content you define displayed via either a list of ids or by using zero or more limiters.

To pick from specific results, you can use a list of post, page, and/or custom content ids.

To pick results from items with certain tags, categories, or authors, you choose to use limiters and then set the limiters you want.

Finally, you can have the system choose to use only post and page results, only custom results, or a mix of the two.

Content and Ad Exclusion

Instead of just using your limiters to display ads and content, the PWS WP Ad Manager plugin has two options to filter what is displayed.

Already Displayed Items

By default, the plugin will not draw ad or content spots for the same item twice on the same page. Whether you place 2 blocks or 20 blocks on a single page, anything previously selected and drawn will not be shown again.

Of course, there may be times when you want to ignore this functionality for certain content blocks. You can add an override option to such blocks telling it to ignore already drawn items and to avoid adding what it draws to the already drawn list. This is quite handy when using the plugin for navigation and content placement purposes.

In fact, I used this functionality to draw the above blocks of image ads. Had I not, I would have needed at least 23 different ads in the system in order to fill the content blocks displayed so far for my second content type, which I am using to place image ads.

When the system runs out of unused ads while drawing ad spots, it simply writes comments to the source to note that there were not enough undisplayed ads for the current settings to draw any remaining ad blocks. That way you can see why an ad group is not showing without having to bother viewers with the information.

Current Post or Page Items

By default, the plugin will not draw ad or content spots associated with the current post or page.

You can also choose to have it include any available spots for the current post or page or show only content spots for the current post or page.

With these options you can avoid drawing ads that are going to take someone to the page they are on, display content that is associated with the current post or page in addition to content from other posts and pages, and even force it to show only content that is associated with the current page…handy for displaying videos related to the current post or page outside of the post or page area.

Usable with almost any WordPress Theme

The PWS WP Ad Manager plugin should work with almost any theme, provided you are running WordPress version 2.8 or newer.

For themes which have the standard header call, you can turn on filters in the ad manager admin panel to have short codes that you place into posts and pages turned into content blocks.

The plugin also comes with a sidebar widget plugin that, when activated, can be used to place ad blocks inside of your sidebars.

Finally, if you don’t mind editing template files, you can use the built in functions to have ad blocks and content blocks placed anywhere on your site.

Integrated with the Privateer Theme

If you use the Privateer Theme, you can place ad blocks in the following areas without any template modifications:

  • In the Site Header ( via the logo bar content area and/or custom content bars )
  • In the Sidebar ( above or below either sidebar as well as inside of the sidebar via the included widget )
  • In the various template level sections ( the Page kicker, byline, above postlist area, below postlist area, and kicker )
  • Inside of the post and page content areas
  • Inside of the post list ad spot areas.

To do so, you need to be running the privateer version 1.6 and overwrite two files with the versions included with this plugin. For newer versions of the Privateer theme, things should simply work once the plugin is activated…though you will need to install and activate the pws-wp-ad-manager-widget plugin if you want to place content blocks inside of your sidebars.
